Alabama Adds Drivewyze Weigh Station Bypass to Interstate 20

BURLINGAME, Calif., May 8, 2014 – Drivewyze has announced that Drivewyze PreClear bypass service has been added in Alabama, making it the 23^rd state to offer the mobile-based weigh station bypass service.

Drivewyze PreClear is now available at the westbound Heflin weigh station near mile marker 214 on U.S. Interstate 20. The site went live on Wednesday, May 7. Interstate 20 is a major east-west route through the center of the Cotton State from its western border with Mississippi to its eastern border with Georgia. I-20 passes through Tuscaloosa and Birmingham.

“More state commercial vehicle inspection officials are recognizing the value of using Drivewyze technology to prescreen safe commercial operators,” said Brian Heath, president of Drivewyze. “We’re pleased that the Alabama Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Safety Unit has joined officials from 22 other states by adding Drivewyze PreClear to the inspection site bypass service it already offers.”

Captain Tim Pullin, commander of the Motor Carrier Safety Unit of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, said Drivewyze provides commercial vehicle inspection officers an additional tool to improve highway safety. “Our officers can concentrate their efforts on vehicles that should be inspected,” Pullin said. “That can help us reduce congestion in and around weigh stations. The trucking industry benefits because we can offer safe carriers more bypass opportunities. The motoring public benefits because we can screen unsafe carriers while maximizing resources.”

“By adding the Drivewyze mobile-based inspection site bypass to U.S. Interstate 20, the Motor Carrier Safety Unit is providing a choice for truck fleets and operators,” Heath said. “Particularly those who would rather use their electronic logging devices or their drivers’ smart phones or tablets as smart transponders. With Drivewyze-enabled sites already online in Mississippi and Florida, long-haul and regional carriers in those three states as well as those that travel within the region will have more opportunities to save money.”

An FMCSA study showed a single bypass made for several minutes can save $8.68 in lost time and fuel costs.

With the addition of the westbound Heflin site in Alabama, Drivewyze PreClear is now available at 298 locations in 23 states. Nearly 70 more permanent and temporary inspection site locations in Texas are expected to go live by the beginning of summer. Rand McNally and Drivewyze recently announced an agreement to provide the Drivewyze PreClear weigh station bypass service for Rand McNally’s suite of mobile fleet management devices. Drivewyze PreClear 3.0, the newest version of the weigh station application, comes with Weigh Station Heads Up service for real-time notifications for more than 700 weigh stations and inspection sites nationwide.

While the Drivewyze PreClear heads-up service is free, the bypass service is subscription-based and starts at $15.75 per vehicle per month with free trial offers and volume discounts available.
