Why is a Good GPS System so Important?

3 min read

Ensuring your truck is equipped with the best available Global Positioning System, more commonly known as GPS, is imperative in ensuring peace of mind when the cab of your truck is your primary workspace. The right GPS system keeps drivers up to date with state-of-the-art routing systems which work seamlessly with other truck systems such as dash cams, headsets, ELDs, and more. The following are five of the best GPS systems on the market today.

Garmin dezl™ OTR

Widely recognized as one of the finest all-round GPS systems for truckers on the market today, the Garmin dezl™ OTR brings together a wide range of important features at competitive prices. The Garmin system is equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to ensure that drivers are never cut off from mapping or other digital systems. Users have access to a lifetime mapping service for free, as well as continuous traffic updates.

The system also allows drivers to record hours of service (HOS) seamlessly as they work. The device can be paired with a smartphone and is compatible with a range of other Garmin products, including headsets, ELDs, dash cams, and more. The OTR system is available at multiple price points, ranging from a small compact device to a large system which acts as an eyewitness for every route.

Rand McNally TND 740

Another recognized leader among trucking navigation systems is the Rand McNally TND 740. This fifth-generation system offers several important features in a compact and user-friendly package. Its advanced lane guidance technology allows drivers comfort-of-mind on crowded roads and keeps them prepared for what’s ahead. The system’s live traffic and weather updates ensure efficiency and that drivers experience no undue climatic surprises along their routes.

The TND 740 calculates toll costs in real-time alongside its advanced routing technology.  It is compatible with Rand McNally ELD systems and can be purchased alongside a magnetic mount which keeps the system securely in place.

SIXGO HD Touchscreen GPS

The SIXGO HD Touchscreen GPS may offer the best bang for its buck in the current market for trucking navigation systems. The product boasts a 9-inch HD touchscreen interface with a 3D map viewpoint and night and day modes for efficient and easy use. The SIXGO is outfitted with a voice assistance system, truck-specific routing, and a lifetime mapping device which is pre-loaded with maps of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico such that it can be utilized without an Internet connection.

The system also offers an entertainment interface which includes MP3 compatibility and access to FM radio and audiobooks. Unlike the other systems discussed here, the SIXGO HD does not allow for wireless or Bluetooth connectivity. However, smartphones can be connected to the system via a USB interface, and the GPS includes a 32-GB memory card. That means, unlike your smartphone, it can access GPS mapping technology without an Internet or cellular connection.

TomTom Trucker 520 and 620

The TomTom Trucker 520 and 620 systems offer a competitive product at a relatively low price-point as compared with high-grade systems such as the Garmin or McNally. Among its features is a customized truck-specific tracking system which accounts for vehicle type, model, weight, size, cargo and speed. It is pre-loaded with comprehensive maps of the U.S. alongside MyDrive route planning, traffic updates, and other live alerts.

The TomTom system has Bluetooth and wireless compatibility which makes it easy to field calls and other messages hands-free while keeping your eyes on the road. It is compatible with Siri and Google Now, meaning drivers are able to access a voice assistant system without lifting their focus from their route. It comes with a magnetic mounting system for ease of access and is available in both the 520 and 620 models, corresponding to their five- and six-inch screens.

The OHREX GPS system is another relatively lower-budget option which still offers drivers efficient navigation services. The device is pre-loaded with constantly-updated maps of North America and support to download maps of Europe and Australia with an additional purchase. The system supports offline maps and both 2D and 3D mapping views, alongside HD touchscreen technology.

Like other systems, it is outfitted with advanced lane guidance. It can also provide updates on traffic, weather, road closures, speed limits and approaching speed cameras, real-time voice guidance, intelligent route planning, and points of interest (POIs) like restaurants and cafes, truck stops, and more. The device boasts a seven-inch screen and is available in a variety of models, each of which is priced below $200.
