Elk Grove Village, located just outside of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, is home to one of the largest industrial parks in North America. It’s now also home to some of the most expensive fines for illegal parking in the country.

As a hotbed for commercial truck traffic, the town of approximately 32,000 residents has dealt with excessive overnight truck parking, especially in the industrial park due to limited truck parking in the area and drivers looking to stay close to their load pick-ups. As a result, Elk Grove Village’s board recently approved an increase to the minimum fine per offense from $30 to $300, with a maximum fine of up to $750 for repeat offenders to deter drivers from illegally parking their rigs. It’s a significant increase – enough to ruin a payday and make a driver think twice about parking overnight within the city limits.

To help notify drivers of these hefty fines, we have added Elk Grove Village Parking alerts to Drivewyze Safety Notifications – a free service for PreClear weigh station bypass customers.

The new alerts remind drivers that they’re entering an area that does not allow overnight parking. Like with all Driver Safety Notifications, drivers will receive a visual and audible warning through their in-cab ELD or telematics device as they approach Elk Grove Village. The alert lets drivers know the hours when parking is not permitted and the dollar amount range in fines that may be issued to drivers in violation of the parking code.

Elk Grove Village prohibits parking within the industrial park between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and has a ban on all parking on village streets between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Drivers illegally parked in the industrial park will first receive a warning from officers between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., but after that grace period, fines will be assessed.

Fueling the illegally parked trucks in Elk Grove Village is a lack of truck parking availability in the area. Like in many parts of the county, safe parking areas for truck drivers can be tough to come by. This region in Illinois is no different. According to a FreightWaves article on Elk Grove Village, truck stop availability in the area is below the national average.

In addition to Elk Grove Village Parking alerts, Drivewyze Safety Notifications provides drivers with notifications on upcoming high rollover zones, low bridges, mountain corridors (alerts that inform drivers to use low gears as well as upcoming runaway ramps), and more. So far, Drivewyze has geo-fenced more than 2,800 zones throughout North America that have been identified as problematic for drivers, with more zones continuing to be added.

The Elk Grove Village Parking alerts are also available for subscribers of Drivewyze Safety+, a premium service that extends the capabilities of Safety Notifications with more alerts, including high-citation areas for speeding, upcoming parking availability, and sudden slowdown alerts in select states. Fleets can also create customized driver safety alerts by geo-fencing their own areas they’ve identified to be troublesome for drivers and access driver behavior analytics.
